Summer Bugs and Their Control

Its full on Summer, June 22nd, and the heat is on all over the country. It has been a very early, hot, dry Spring and Summer here in Santa Fe and New Mexico. People have been calling in about BUGS!!!! There are 2 main types that are causing concern. First are aphids- very small, green, oval 'buggers', that attack plants and leaves and suck the juices. The Pac Chois are the worst for attracting these creatures, probably because they have the juiciest leaves and stalks.

Cold weather protection

Cold weather got your plants down? Put an extra layer of row cover over your plants, and underneath your other cover(s). Each layer lowers the zone by 1-1/2. This should get your plants through very frigid conditions.

Using Remesh for Staking Tomatoes

Learn how to use remesh to stake tomatoes, peas, beans, or anything that vines, really,  in a Grow Y'own raised bed garden.
**Note that the final height of the remesh should be 3', not 3.5' as the video says. The remesh is 6"x6", and can be cut with a bolt cutter to size. We put the remesh underneath the center ridge pipe, and attach it with zip ties at every spacing. At the bottom, we cut out the horizontal wire pieces between the vertical pieces, and stick the 6" of verticals into the soil for stability. We site the beds North/South in direction, so the sun will hit the East side of the wire/plant wall in the morning, and the West side in the afternoon. This way, there isn't any shading of plants on either side of the wire. If you want to site the bed East/West, then we attach the wire under the ridge pipe, but we arch the wire to the rear of the bed, and stick it into the soil about 6" inside the back frame. You'll then be able to access the crops from both sides of the wire, but all the rest of the crops that are growing horizontally will be in full sun. You will probably have to cut the wire a little longer to accommodate the length of the arch.

Terra and I harvested arugula, tatsoi, parsley, seven kinds of lettuce and Swiss chard right through the coldest New Mexico nights and days. Just look at the photo!
